Paphos harbour & medieval castle
The Paphos harbour forms a hub of activity day and night. Lined with cute cafes and fish restaurants, you can soak up the sunshine, relax to the sound of the waves and tuck into delicious food al fresco. The main attraction here is the Paphos castle (also known as the Paphos Fort), originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the area and rebuilt by the Ottomans in the 16th century.
Walk over the small bridge across the moat and head inside the castle to explore the various chambers and rooms. Be sure to also take a look at the multiple historical artifacts in the castle’s small museum. The upper floors of the castle offer panoramic views of the harbour and surrounding areas.
Archeological Park of Kato Paphos
As one of the most important historical sites to see on the island, the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos is the perfect place to get better acquainted with the rich history and culture of the region. Most monuments here date back to the Roman Empire and are exceptionally well maintained. The houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion, and Orpheus are a real highlight, while the intricate mosaic floors are celebrated as some of the finest in the Mediterranean. Each mosaic features various vibrant scenes from Greek mythology.
The ancient Odeon is also fascinating, inviting history lovers to sit where Roman senators did years ago. Be sure to also pass by the Tombs of the Kings – an impressive necropolis built during the Hellenistic period and used in the Roman period – and the Saranta Kolones (Forty Columns) abandoned Byzantine castle.
Paphos old town
Compact and incredibly charming, the recently revamped Paphos old town is an enticing blend of old-world charm and modern attractions. Historical buildings have been restored to their former glory, new art installations add colour and interest to the area, and countless chic eateries and eclectic bars lining the new pedestrianised zones provide the perfect place to quench your thirst or enjoy a bite to eat.
The area is popular with locals, and plenty of shops in the vicinity sell clothes, accessories, homeware, and crafts. So if you’re looking for the perfect souvenir or gift to take back home, this is the place to find non-touristy treasures like traditional jewellery or ceramics!
Paphos Promenade
Put your best foot forward on a leisurely stroll right by the sea along the Paphos promenade, which begins at the harbour and stretches 1km along the coastline. Lined with gracious palm trees and pretty flowers, it’s a fine spot for a late afternoon or early walk once the sun begins to set.
Look out for the impressive outdoor sculptures in the area, including ‘The Little Fisherman’ and ‘Sol Alter’, paying homage to the Goddess of Love and Beauty, Aphrodite. Once you’ve explored, kick back and relax on one of the promenade benches or take in the views with a sundowner at one of the many cafes or restaurants along the promenade.
Kings Avenue Mall
Head straight to Kings Avenue Mall for the ultimate shopping therapy. Just 500 metres from Sofianna Resort & Spa, the mall is home to over 120 shops all under one roof, so you can easily spend the day here. There’s something for every taste and budget, from designer brands to high-street stores.
More than just a shopping destination, the mall has plenty of places to eat and drink. A multiplex cinema enhances the entertaining experience, and an arcade is bound to give the little ones good reason to smile.
